POLITICAL SEASON HAS ARRIVED!
HOW MUCH DO WE REALLY LOVE OUR CHILDREN AND OUR COUNTRY?
Hello again Dear Friends,
The political ads on TV have already started, and for a closely contested state like Colorado (where I live) it will soon be relentless. I find the overall energy of a political campaign both negative and deflating, and I do my best to shut off the ads as soon as they begin.
What I think bothers me most is the lack of respect the candidates have for me. I often wonder just how stupid, selfish, and lazy they really think I am as they refuse to offer legitimate solutions to our country’s biggest problems.
Our budget deficits and our lack of domestic job creation will bring the United States to its knees, and nobody is willing to address the truth! One of the reasons that we study history is to learn and avoid mistakes of the past, but we are witnessing another 2008 financial crisis, and almost nobody is alarmed.
As a mortgage banking CEO I was right in the middle of the mortgage and financial meltdown and it amazed me at the time how no one of power and influence was willing to objectively look at the situation leading up to the collapse. The handwriting was clear as day! How long do you think a company like Lehman Brothers and others could originate $5 billion per month in home mortgages at 95% of property value to borrowers who did not need to verify their income? Additionally they did this with mostly borrowed money, sound familiar? Really, were people in the know actually surprised when these loans did not perform?
Well, here we are again, only a few short years later and once again the handwriting could not be clearer. The United States is borrowing over 42 cents of every dollar it spends and this is increasing daily. Additionally, there is very little net job creation. How long do you really think this is sustainable, and who is ultimately going to pay the price for our negligence? We are setting up to lay this entire mess on our children and grandchildren, because we don’t want to deal with it.
The answers and solutions seem clear to me. The only way we are going to balance the budget is with huge spending cuts AND increased taxes (I prefer closing corporate loopholes and a national sales tax)! If this seems so obvious, then why aren’t our political leaders putting forth such a simple to understand idea? Frankly, the answer should be obvious; THE TRUTH IS UNELECTABLE and our candidates are more concerned with getting elected then solving our problems.
Each side appeals directly to their own selfish and lazy constituents. In one camp, the idea is to raise taxes on the rich, and the other side wants only to cut spending. Neither plan by itself will work; we all know it, but nobody will tell the truth for fear that it is an unelectable platform.
Who in our selfish, lazy, and ignorant society will elect someone who has the guts to tell us we will need to sacrifice for years, there will be discomfort, there will be tax increases, and there will be massive spending cuts? The people of the United States and our leaders just want to leave all these problems (that we are responsible for) to the next generations.
Clearly I write this piece with the knowledge that not everyone falls into the selfish, lazy, ignorant group, but unless we see a huge change very soon, we are heading for a big fall which will make the financial crisis of 2008 look small. This future financial collapse indeed may be a positive event as there will finally be the discomfort needed for transformation to begin.
Every addict I have ever known either eventually dies, or when the pain gets great enough, finds the motivation for personal change. We, the Unites States, are a country addicted to debt and so far with limited discomfort we are unwilling to change our ways.
This letter may seem unusually harsh, but eventually we will begin a new era where male dominance, lack of personal responsibility, overt materialism, violence, and lack of care for planet Earth, will no longer work. It’s our choice right now to decide how much discomfort we want before our inevitable positive transformation.
It’s more important than ever to know, right now, how to manifest a positive and abundant life for ourselves regardless of what’s going on around us. We may not be able to directly control politics, big business, or government, but knowing how to create personal individual change is what I will continue to write and speak about.
Please, open your eyes and wake up. How much do we really love our children and our country? Did we learn anything from our recent history?
My best to all with love,
