GRATITUDE AND FORGIVENESS, OUR ANCHORS FOR PEACE AND CALM
Hello again Dear Friends,
Gratitude is a wonderful state of mind and being, and like most emotions we have control over it. Just yesterday I called my dear friend Dr. George to offer condolences on the passing of his 92 year old father. George and his father were very close, best friends in fact, and I was expecting George to be in a very saddened state.
When he answered the phone and greeted me I was surprised by his energy and upbeat demeanor in spite of the circumstances. He explained that he was in the process of writing his dad's obituary and rather than being despondent the exercise was causing him to become overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.
Dr. George, a thirty year physician, knows all too well how fleeting our physical life can be, and that we are all eventually passing on from this physical experience. With this in mind, and reliving his father's life, he was consumed with immense gratitude for this wonderful man and how fortunate he is.
With the death of a dear one, sadness and loss are certain to some degree, but gratitude is a conscious choice. It's also a choice for each of us every day of our lives.
Our friends, our family, our food, our shelter, our clothing, our pets, our transportation...The fact is we all have it pretty good, and spending moments each day in that wondrous place of gratitude is essential for our well being.
To many of us our world appears quite chaotic, but have you ever stopped and witnessed the cooperation that exists around us? On a grand scale think about the cooperation between the perfectly spinning planet Earth on its axis, revolving around the sun, as our solar system moves through the galaxy, all without skipping a beat! Any gratitude for this mind boggling occurance?
How about the cooperation among airplanes, cars, buses, trains, and people, all moving mostly seamlessly together? How about the cooperation required to produce the mechanical and food items we consume daily? How about the cooperation of our human bodies to produce offspring? Is there gratitude?
Often times, just like you, I observe and may get upset with the perceived chaos of our world, but when I settle down, I'm quick to realize my gratitude for all the cooperation that makes our physical experience work.
Living in a continuing state of forgiveness may be just as important as gratitude when it comes to our daily well being, and, having a fertile vibration to create with. Most of us are doing our best moment by moment even when we look back at our mistakes. We need not forget since most of our wrongdoings have taught us our greatest lessons, but it is imperative we forgive ourselves for past errors in judgment.
Once we are able to forgive ourselves the next process is that of forgiving others. From the emails and comments I continually receive I know this can be very difficult for many, but are you aware why it's critical to forgive?
When we are in a place of lacking of forgiveness we are almost certainly living in the past, and when our attention is not in the present we are unable to create what we currently desire. Does this make sense? Not forgiving is actually energetically holding us back from what we presently desire in life.
Want to actually feel this subtle change in energy? Think of something or someone you are unable to forgive at this moment, close your eyes and observe how you feel. Now begin to breathe easily and smoothly, and try allowing yourself to forgive yourself or another for something which has occurred in the past. Does the act of forgiving change the way you feel? Are you lighter, more relaxed?
When each day of our lives has focused moments of gratitude and forgiveness our physical experience brightens in ways you can only imagine. Give it a try!
With love and appreciation,
